The Montgó Natural Park, established in 1987, consists of 3,200 acres (2,117 hectares) of protected lands and flora and fauna between Denia and Javea (Xabia). The betibo hotel site sits in the P.O.R.N., a unique protected buffer zone in the northeast corner of the park.
El Montgó Massif, the central feature of the park, is a dramatic limestone escarpment some 2,400 feet high (753m). The Montgó rises sharply, its peak is within 1.5 kilometers of the Mediterranean, with Denia to its north and east and Javea to its south.
The Romans show a documented presence on the Montgó from the 4th and 5th centuries B.C. largely for defensive positions. Today, ecotourism is a particular draw. Hiking, mountain bike riding, and guided tours are highly rated by locals and visitors.
Additionally, an extraordinary and varied landscape surrounds Denia and Javea. La Marina Alta covers 290 square miles (758km2) with stunning coastlines of cliffs, sandy coves, and long beaches. Coastal flatlands with citrus and vineyards suddenly rise to dramatic peaks just kilometers inland. Winding roads lead to beautiful mountain villages, through terraced orchards of almond trees, their pink blossoms in early February and stunning shows from the cherry orchards in March. No matter the season, there are days of exploring to be had within minutes of betibo.
Unexpected hotels in villages with dramatic views make for great discoveries. The village of Alcala de la Jovada and it’s boutique hotel, La Font d’Alcala, make for an excellent example. The mountain villages supply produce, eggs, and meats to the coastal towns and they in turn supply fresh fish and citrus… a very welcome and ancient synergy.
